In late May, Matthew had a work conference in Providence, RI and I decided to tag along because neither of us had really explored the Northeast before. Both of us really wanted to see Boston while we were there, so we booked train tickets so that we’d be able to go explore the city for a few hours the first night.

Our train arrived in Boston at 4:45pm. We were both pretty hungry, so we went to this super cool restaurant called Pier 6 located on the Bay. Pier 6 is a small restaurant with outstanding views. I’m not a big seafood fan, but Matthew is and he had this tasty looking lobster roll.

After dinner, Matthew and I walked over to the Boston Navy Shipyard which was right next to the restaurant. The Boston Navy Shipyard is one of the oldest shipbuilding facilities in the United States Navy and is the location of USS Constitution.

Next on our speedy sightseeing tour was the Old North Church. This church was founded in 1722 and is one of the oldest churches in the nation that is still standing. It’s also the historic site where two members of the church climbed the steps to the top of the steeple and held two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British troops were heading towards Lexington and Concord by sea. How cool is that?!

Just down the street from the church, we came across Paul Revere’s House. It was so incredible to see such an old historic building surrounded by modern skyscrapers. It’s crazy to see how much Boston has developed around all of these monumental historic sites.

Since Matthew and I both work in the Missouri State Capitol, we try to visit other state capitols when ever we travel to new places. We didn’t have time to tour the inside of the Massachusetts State Capitol, but we did take some time to walk around outside of it. It was beautiful and sits on top of a hill. There was a cool park down the hill in front of it with a lot of people playing frisbee and walking their dogs.

Although we didn’t get to see everything we wanted to, I was impressed with how much we were able to do in our short time in Boston. Our train left Boston at 9:30 and put us back in Providence just before 10:30. That gave us just under five hours in this historic city and we loved every second of it.
